Nasdaq Sinks About 3.6% in Its Worst Day Since June as the AI Spending Bill Comes Due

By 3 p.m. Friday the Nasdaq was down about 3.6% and the S&P 500 about 2.3%, with the VIX up more than 30%, as Intel, Amazon and the chip sector led a broad tech sell-off.

Friday turned a week of uneven tech earnings into a full-blown sell-off. On Thursday the damage was concentrated in Alphabet and the average stock still rose. On Friday the selling spread across technology, semiconductors and the rest of the market, and volatility jumped. I think the message is that investors have stopped giving Big Tech the benefit of the doubt on AI spending.

The Numbers at 3 p.m.

Around 3 p.m. Eastern, the Nasdaq Composite was down about 3.6%, the S&P 500 about 2.3% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average about 1.4%, based on Yahoo Finance data. In that data, the Nasdaq’s last larger one-day drop was a 4.2% decline on June 5. The Russell 2000 was down about 2.4% and the equal-weight S&P 500, through the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF, about 1.1%. The VIX volatility index jumped more than 30% to around 22.6, after sitting near 16 on Thursday.

Technology was the epicenter. The Technology Select Sector SPDR was down about 5.9%, while energy and health care funds edged higher. Intel was down about 31% after its fourth-quarter forecast, which Bloomberg describes as its steepest drop in more than four decades, and Nvidia was off about 5.4%. The Associated Press reported that Nvidia’s slide was the single heaviest weight on the S&P 500, even more than Intel’s. Every one of the large AI spenders was lower: Amazon about 2.2%, Alphabet 2.3%, Microsoft 2.0% and Meta 1.9%.

Why the Selling Spread

The trigger was a week of results in which cloud and AI revenue grew fast but capital spending grew faster. Amazon’s filing showed $77.3 billion of property and equipment purchases in a single quarter and trailing free cash flow of minus $42.4 billion, after Alphabet reported negative free cash flow on $51.4 billion of capex. Yahoo Finance summed up the mood as an AI reckoning. NBC News reported that the Nasdaq 100 was on course to lose more than $1.5 trillion in market value, though estimates of that figure varied between outlets during the session.

The usual havens offered little cover. Gold fell about 3.5% to near $3,890 an ounce and silver about 6.6%, which suggests some investors were raising cash wherever they had gains. Bitcoin was down about 1.8% near $76,400 after this week’s Binance hack. The 10-year Treasury yield fell to about 4.92%, the one classic safe-haven move of the day, while U.S. crude rose about 1.9% to around $104.

The Week in One Line

On Yahoo Finance closing data, the Nasdaq ended last week at 25,955 and was trading near 25,240 on Friday afternoon, a weekly loss of almost 3%, after it had climbed to about 26,550 at Wednesday’s close. With the final hour still to trade, closing levels may differ. Next week brings the October jobs report, and with the Fed split over another hike, a market that has just lost its tech cushion will be more sensitive to it than usual.
