Elon Musk’s latest posts on X are not about the election. Over the past two hours, he has been promoting Grok Bot, the AI agent that can make phone calls, book appointments and plan travel on a user’s behalf. The timing is interesting, because two days ago Musk said the product was costing far more to run than it earned.
What Musk Posted
On Tuesday, Musk wrote on X that Grok Bot can research which doctors are the best in a user’s area, call them by phone and make an appointment, in response to a user who described the agent booking an appointment for an injured child. In another post, he said Grok Bot “can do complex trips,” sharing a user’s account of booking flights for a family trip. Both posts went up in the early afternoon, U.S. Eastern time.
These are the use cases the whole industry is chasing. An agent that completes real-world tasks, rather than just answering questions, is the product most AI companies are trying to sell to consumers, and Musk is promoting real examples from users rather than demonstrations.
The Cost Problem
According to Teslarati, Grok Bot runs as an always-available agent with its own persistent cloud computer, and access is bundled into X subscription tiers of roughly $30, $100 and $200 a month, with shared weekly usage pools whose sizes have not been disclosed. Users recently reported hitting their weekly limits early. Replying to one of them on Nov. 1, Musk wrote that “the cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue,” Teslarati reported.
Teslarati also reports rapid adoption: roughly 800,000 paid weekly users earlier in October, and daily active users rising from under 100,000 in early September to more than 600,000 by late October, figures it attributes to the company. Musk described it in October as the fastest growth of a product he had ever seen, according to the same report.
Why It Matters Beyond X
This is the same tension that hit Big Tech stocks last week, at a smaller scale. Agents that make phone calls and run multi-step tasks consume far more computing than a chatbot answer, so each new user adds real cost. Grok Bot’s growth shows that demand is there; the tightening of limits shows that the pricing has not yet caught up. I would watch for any change in subscription prices or usage tiers, which would tell us whether Musk’s companies intend to charge more for the agent or ration it.
