October 29, 2026 | TickerRoast Markets Analysis
The headline indexes say Thursday is a down day. Underneath, more stocks are rising than falling. The gap between the two is almost entirely explained by one company: Alphabet, which was down about 12% in early afternoon trading after its third-quarter report, on pace for its worst session in at least ten years.
Where the Market Stands at Midday
Around 1 p.m. Eastern, the Nasdaq Composite was down about 1.3%, the S&P 500 about 0.3% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average about 0.3%, according to Yahoo Finance data. The Russell 2000 small-cap index was up about 1%, and the equal-weight S&P 500, tracked here through the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF, was up about 0.9%. When the average stock beats the cap-weighted index by more than a full percentage point, the selling is concentrated in a few large names rather than spread across the market.
Sector funds confirm the rotation. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR was up about 2.1% and the Financial Select Sector SPDR about 1.5%, while the Technology Select Sector SPDR was down about 1.2%. The VIX volatility index eased to around 16, which is not what a broad risk-off day looks like.

Alphabet Leads the Megacap Losses
Alphabet’s Class A shares were around $284, down roughly 12.4% from Wednesday’s close. In Yahoo Finance daily data going back ten years, the stock’s largest one-day decline was 11.6% in March 2020, so a close near current levels would be its worst session in at least a decade. Alphabet’s third-quarter results showed Google Cloud revenue up 103% to $30.7 billion, but Search and YouTube advertising came in below analysts’ expectations, and capital spending of $51.4 billion pushed free cash flow negative.
The rest of the megacap group was mixed. Amazon was down about 3.2% ahead of its own report, Oracle about 4.6% after Wednesday’s 12% Investor Day rally and Microsoft about 1.2% despite its after-hours gain on Wednesday. Meta was up about 3.6% and Apple about 1.8%. Crude oil was down about 1.7%, near $101 a barrel, and the 10-year Treasury yield slipped just below 5% after the third-quarter GDP report showed growth of 3.4%.
Amazon After the Bell
The next test comes after the close. Amazon will hold its third-quarter call at 5 p.m. Eastern. After Alphabet and Microsoft, the market has made its priorities clear: cloud growth is rewarded, but only if the core business holds up and the cost of AI capacity looks manageable. I expect AWS growth and Amazon’s capital spending to be read against exactly that standard.
