Intel beat its own guidance on revenue, gross margin and earnings, and its data center business grew at the fastest pace in 15 years. None of that mattered after the company forecast fourth-quarter revenue below the quarter it just reported and warned that the PC slump will last at least through the first half of 2027. The stock ended after-hours trading about 23% lower.
A Beat Followed by a Step Down
According to Intel’s third-quarter release, revenue rose 21% year over year to $16.5 billion. Non-GAAP earnings per share came in at $0.52, up from $0.23, and GAAP earnings per share were $0.60. Yahoo Finance reports that revenue matched analysts’ average estimate and that the adjusted figure beat a consensus of $0.41 a share.
The problem was the outlook. Intel forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $15.0 billion to $16.0 billion, non-GAAP earnings of $0.25 a share and a non-GAAP gross margin of 38.0%, down from 44.1% in the third quarter. Yahoo Finance puts the average analyst estimate for fourth-quarter revenue at $17 billion. At the midpoint, Intel is guiding revenue down about 6% sequentially and earnings per share down by more than half.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q4 2026 guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $16.5B | $15.0B-$16.0B |
| Non-GAAP gross margin | 44.1% | 38.0% |
| Non-GAAP EPS | $0.52 | $0.25 |
| GAAP EPS | $0.60 | $0.10 |
Data Center Strength, PC Weakness
The segment table explains why the quarter looked good and the guide does not. Data Center and AI revenue jumped 78% to $7.3 billion, and its operating income tripled to $3.04 billion from $964 million. Chief financial officer David Zinsner called it the strongest data center revenue growth in 15 years. Intel Foundry revenue grew 58% to $6.7 billion, and its operating loss narrowed to $1.85 billion from $2.32 billion.
Client Computing and Physical AI, the PC business, went the other way, with revenue down 5% to $8.1 billion and operating income down to $2.29 billion from $2.69 billion. Zinsner said in the release that he sees the PC slowdown continuing at least through the first half of next year. According to Yahoo Finance, Intel expects the PC market to decline about 10% next year after an anticipated 12% drop in 2026, and the report ties the weakness to a severe memory chip shortage that has pushed up laptop and desktop prices and dampened demand.
Supply Is the Other Constraint
Chief executive Lip-Bu Tan framed the quarter around supply. In the release, he said Intel’s immediate priority is to unlock additional supply to meet what he called extraordinary demand for its Xeon server processors. Yahoo Finance reports that Tan said data center results could have been stronger without raw material shortages and an unexpected shutdown at Intel’s Fab 28 plant in Kiryat Gat, Israel, after an explosion on Oct. 14. Tan told Bloomberg he was disappointed that Intel could not fulfill customer requirements, according to the same report.
That combination is uncomfortable for a stock that has been priced for a turnaround. Demand for server chips is there, but Intel cannot ship enough of them, while the PC business that still generates more than half of product revenue is shrinking because of component costs it does not control.

The chart shows Intel’s six-month price action through Thursday’s close at $92.07, before the after-hours decline. The stock was already below its 20-day average near $99 and its 50-day average near $102, with the 20-day turning lower after a failed rally toward $125 in late September, and its RSI was around 42. An after-hours drop of about 23% implies a price near $71, below every close shown on this six-month chart and well under the late-July low near $83.
The Balance Sheet Has Room, the Margin Does Not
Financially, Intel is in a stronger position than a year ago. It completed a $23 billion public equity offering during the period, and the cash flow reconciliation shows $5.1 billion of operating cash flow in the quarter, gross capital expenditures of $4.2 billion and adjusted free cash flow of $1.64 billion. GAAP operating margin rose to 15.3% from 5.0%.
The gross margin guide is the number I would watch most closely. Falling from 44.1% to 38.0% in one quarter suggests that lower PC volumes, a less favorable mix and the cost of disruptions weigh heavily on factory utilization. For a company whose investment case rests on filling its own fabs, both for its products and for foundry customers, utilization is the lever that matters.
How the Market Reacted
Intel shares had already fallen 3.62% during Thursday’s regular session, according to Yahoo Finance. After the report, the stock ended after-hours trading 23.01% below its close, according to Stock Titan. The selloff spread to chipmakers and PC makers in Asia overnight, as I describe in this morning’s brief.
I read the reaction less as a verdict on Intel’s technology roadmap, where the release cites the 14A process design kit and the Diamond Rapids server chip, than as a reset of near-term earnings power. The next test is whether supply improves fast enough for data center growth to offset the PC decline in the first half of 2027, the period management has already flagged as weak.
