Corning reported third-quarter results on October 27 that showed how much of the AI buildout now runs through glass and fiber: optical communications sales rose 44%, and management raised its long-range ambitions.
Optical Carries the Quarter
According to Corning’s earnings exhibit filed with the SEC, third-quarter core sales were $5.081 billion, up 19% from a year earlier, while GAAP net sales were $4.855 billion, up 18%. Core earnings per share reached $0.91, up 36%, and GAAP diluted EPS was $0.78, up 56%. Core operating margin widened by 310 basis points to 22.7%, and core gross margin rose 150 basis points to 40.5%.
The mix of growth is what stands out. Optical Communications sales were $2.379 billion, up 44%. Within that segment, Enterprise Networks sales grew 84% and sales of products tied to generative AI more than doubled. On the company’s investor relations page, optical net income is shown rising 80% to $532 million, and Chairman and CEO Wendell Weeks said Gen AI sales growth was outpacing GPU unit growth, a claim that suggests fiber content per data center is increasing faster than the number of accelerators installed.
| Segment | Q3 2026 net sales | Change vs. year earlier |
|---|---|---|
| Optical Communications | $2,379M | +44% |
| Glass Innovations | $1,506M | -3% |
| Automotive | $470M | +4% |
| Solar | $436M | +37% |
| Life Sciences and Emerging Growth | $290M | -1% |
Four Multibillion-Dollar Contracts and a Bigger Plan
Corning said it signed four long-term, multibillion-dollar customer agreements during the quarter, including with Verizon and AT&T, and that customers share part of the cost and risk of the capacity expansions that support them. That structure matters for a capital-intensive manufacturer: it partly shifts the financing burden of new fiber capacity onto buyers who want guaranteed supply.
The company also upgraded its Springboard plan to a “20-30-40” framework. Management aims to roughly double its annualized sales run rate from $20 billion to $40 billion by the end of 2030, with earnings growing faster than sales, higher return on invested capital and substantially more free cash flow. Adjusted free cash flow was $2.27 billion for the first nine months of 2026, and $661 million in the third quarter alone. A target of this size is an ambition, not a forecast, and it depends on AI data center spending continuing at its current pace.
The Weaker Corners: Solar and Display Glass
Not every segment kept pace. Solar sales rose 37% to $436 million, but the unit posted a $7 million net loss against $30 million of net income a year earlier. Corning said production is ramping more slowly than anticipated, though it pointed to U.S. Section 232 trade action as a tailwind for pricing and demand for American-made solar products and said it is working toward a Solar revenue stream above $3 billion.
Glass Innovations, which serves televisions, notebooks and smartphones, fell 3% to $1.506 billion. The company attributed the decline to memory pricing pressure in those consumer markets. It is a reminder that the same AI spending boom that lifts demand for fiber can squeeze component budgets elsewhere in electronics.
What the Market Is Weighing
For the fourth quarter, Corning guided to core sales up about 19% to between $5.2 billion and $5.3 billion and core EPS up about 36% to between $0.96 and $1.00. Yahoo Finance reported that the shares were up about 3% in premarket trading after earnings and revenue beat estimates; the regular-session reaction can differ from the premarket move.
The questions investors tend to ask about a story like this are about durability and concentration. Optical growth of 44% from a $2.4 billion quarterly base is a large absolute increase, and guidance implies the company expects the pace to hold into year-end. At the same time, the results depend heavily on a relatively small group of hyperscale and carrier customers, and the long-term agreements both protect volumes and tie Corning’s returns to its customers’ build schedules. Margin gains this quarter came with higher volumes; whether they persist as new capacity comes online and depreciation rises is a point to watch in coming reports.
