SK hynix Earns an 80% Operating Margin and Promises to Hand Back About $75 Billion to Shareholders

SK hynix reported a third-quarter operating profit of 83.3 trillion won on revenue above 100 trillion won, beating Bloomberg estimates and unveiling a 100 trillion won shareholder return plan.

SK hynix posted the most profitable quarter in its history, and the numbers are of a size rarely seen outside the largest U.S. technology companies. The company also said memory supply will not keep pace with AI demand through 2030. That claim, not the quarter, is what investors have to price.

An 80% Operating Margin in a Commodity Business

According to the company’s third-quarter 2026 results release, SK hynix generated revenue of 104.6 trillion won, up 328% from a year earlier and 32% from the second quarter. It was the first time quarterly revenue exceeded 100 trillion won. Operating profit was 83.3 trillion won, up 632% year over year and 38% sequentially, for an operating margin of 80%, compared with 47% a year earlier and 76% in the second quarter. The release notes that the figures are preliminary and under independent audit review.

Investing.com, citing Bloomberg, put consensus for operating profit at 77.5 trillion won, so the result beat by roughly 7.5%. Net income was 39.8 trillion won, up 216% from a year ago but down from 93.9 trillion won in the second quarter, according to the release’s comparison table. The release table does not explain the sequential drop, and with operating profit up 38% I would not read it as an operating weakness.

HBM4 Is Now the Product That Matters

Management said shipments of HBM4, the newest generation of high-bandwidth memory used alongside AI accelerators, began in earnest this quarter, and that HBM4 is expected to surpass HBM3E in both shipments and revenue in the fourth quarter. The company’s new M15X fab is due to ramp to maximum capacity by year-end. In conventional DRAM, sales of server DDR5 rose significantly, and in NAND, 321-layer eSSD sales expanded; the 321-layer share of the company’s NAND capacity is set to exceed half in the fourth quarter.

SK hynix controls between 50% and 58% of global HBM supply, according to Counterpoint Research as cited by Investing.com, and is a major supplier to Nvidia. That position explains the margin. When the product is scarce and qualification takes quarters, the supplier, not the buyer, sets terms.

Contracts Stretch Into 2028 and Beyond

The most consequential disclosure may be about contracts. SK hynix said long-term agreements now cover 14 major customers, including global cloud providers, and more than half of its 2027 and 2028 production capacity. Such agreements typically run five years, and extensions are under discussion, with pricing set within agreed ranges that reflect market conditions. Chief Executive Kwak Noh-Jung said that “supply, on the other hand, is not keeping pace with the growth of the market,” and the company expects memory demand to exceed supply through 2030, along with a further step up in revenue and profit next year.

Memory has historically been a boom-and-bust industry because capacity is added at the top of the cycle. Multi-year contracts covering more than half of future output are an attempt to break that pattern, and they are the right thing to track. If prices within those agreed ranges hold, margins can stay elevated even as new capacity arrives; if customers renegotiate, the market will quickly revisit the cycle assumption. Capacity is also on the way: the release says Yongin Phase 1 enters full-scale operation next year and that investment is expected to rise significantly, though it gives no capex figure.

About 100 Trillion Won Back to Shareholders

The company set a total shareholder return target of about 100 trillion won for 2026, roughly $75 billion according to Investing.com. It comprises cash dividends of at least 30 trillion won and buybacks and cancellations of at least 60 trillion won, including a 40 trillion won repurchase announced in August and completed last week. SK hynix also committed to returning at least 50% of free cash flow. For the third quarter, the board declared a 14 trillion won cash dividend, equal to 20,000 won per share, of which 10,000 won is a special dividend funded by gains on its Kioxia stake, and a 20 trillion won buyback, of which 10 trillion won will be cancelled and the rest used for employee compensation.

The balance sheet gives it room to do so. Cash stood at 114.5 trillion won, borrowings fell 2.8 trillion won to 15.8 trillion won, and net cash rose to 98.7 trillion won. The release also said the company discontinued its review of a Solidigm IPO.

How Markets Reacted

Korean shares rose about 3% in morning trading and U.S.-listed depositary receipts gained 4% in the aftermarket, per Investing.com. Broader Asian markets leaned on the result: South Korea’s KOSPI rose 5.7% in early trade, according to HDFC Sky. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index had already risen 3.6% on Tuesday and is up 62.1% this year, which means expectations were not low going in.

The chart shows the Seoul-listed shares, priced in won, against their moving averages. With expectations already high, the relevant test is whether 2027 estimates move up as much as the headline did. Seagate’s report on the storage side, also released this week, points the same direction on AI demand, and both companies describe customers committing to supply years ahead, which suggests the next surprise is more likely to come from pricing and new capacity than from demand.
