Sysco Sinks 9% as 0.3% Food Inflation Drags Sales Below Forecasts Despite an In-Line Profit

Sysco (SYY) closed down 9.33% at $74.11 on Nov 3, 2026 after sales missed forecasts on near-zero food inflation and it trimmed its sales outlook.

Sysco (NYSE: SYY) closed down 9.33% at $74.11 on Tuesday, Nov 3, 2026, from $81.74 the previous session, according to Yahoo Finance price data, on volume of about 9.4 million shares, roughly double the prior day. The food distributor reported fiscal first-quarter results before the open. Data as of the Nov 3, 2026 close.

Profit Landed Where Management Said It Would

On the bottom line, Sysco delivered. According to its first-quarter fiscal 2027 release, filed with the SEC, adjusted EPS rose 3.5% to $1.19, GAAP EPS rose 10.1% to $1.09, gross profit increased 3.8% to $4.1 billion and gross margin widened 18 basis points to 18.6%. U.S. Foodservice local case volume, the metric investors watch most closely, grew 2.7%. Chief executive Kevin Hourican said adjusted EPS was “in-line with our expectations.”

According to Investing.com, analysts had expected adjusted EPS of $1.19, so the profit line was a match rather than a beat. The headline problem sat one line higher.

The Sales Miss Came Down to Prices, Not Cases

Total sales rose 2.8% to $21.7 billion. That fell short of consensus: Investing.com cited an estimate of $22.02 billion, while Financial News cited a Zacks consensus of $22.19 billion. The two figures differ, but both put the shortfall in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

The reason is unusual for a distributor. Sysco’s release says product cost inflation was just 0.3% at the enterprise level. On the call, according to the Investing.com transcript, Hourican said the lower-than-expected food cost inflation “accounts for the sales delta” versus the company’s expectations. For a business that largely passes through what food costs, cooler inflation shrinks the dollar value of the same number of cases. Management also cited continued softness in restaurant foot traffic and higher-than-expected fuel costs.

Why the Stock Fell: A Trimmed Sales Line and a Big Pending Deal

The forward-looking change was modest but clear. Sysco reaffirmed adjusted EPS growth of 9% to 11% for fiscal 2027 and local volume growth of about 2.5%, but chief financial officer Brandon Sewell said full-year sales growth is now expected at the lower end of the 6% to 7% range, reflecting lower industry inflation. In a separate release, Sysco confirmed Sewell, interim CFO since March 2026, as permanent CFO effective Nov. 1.

My read is that the market punished the combination of a top-line miss and a heavy agenda. Sysco is preparing to close its acquisition of Jetro Restaurant Depot, which Financial News values at roughly $29 billion, and Investing.com reports that the company expects the deal to close by the end of its fiscal third quarter. When a company is taking on a deal of that size, investors tend to want the core business to over-deliver, not land in line.

Context: Defensive Names Had a Rough Day

The broader tape gave little cover either way. According to Yahoo Finance index data, the S&P 500 rose 0.36% to 7,568.92 on Election Day, the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.83% as chip stocks rebounded, and the Dow slipped 0.38%, weighed down by Apple, as StockTitan’s session wrap also noted. Sysco’s 9% drop placed it among the S&P 500’s worst performers on the day, according to Chartmill, alongside Gartner and Zebra Technologies. At $74.11, the stock is closer to its 52-week low of $68.19 than to its high of $91.85, according to Yahoo Finance.

What I’ll Be Watching

The swing factor is inflation. If food costs pick up as the year goes on, the sales gap could narrow without Sysco selling a single extra case; if they stay near zero, the lower end of the range becomes the realistic case. I will also watch the restaurant traffic data Sysco flagged, the timing of the Jetro closing, and whether the $100 million in AI-enabled cost savings management included in its guidance shows up in the second half as promised.
