October 28, 2026 | TickerRoast Markets Analysis
Searches for “supplemental security income” are climbing on Google this week, and the reason is a calendar quirk rather than a policy change. Supplemental Security Income recipients will see two deposits in October and none in November. I went through the Social Security Administration’s own schedule and its 2027 cost-of-living figures to explain what is happening and what it means for household budgets.
Why the November Payment Lands on October 30
SSI is normally paid on the first day of the month. When the first falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, the payment goes out on the last business day before it. November 1, 2026 is a Sunday, so the Social Security Administration’s 2026 payment calendar (Publication No. 05-10031) marks Friday, October 30 as the SSI payment date. The same calendar shows the regular October payment on Thursday, October 1.
This is the point that causes the most confusion every time it happens: the October 30 deposit is the November benefit, paid early. It is not a bonus and it is not an extra check. Recipients who see two deposits in October will see no SSI deposit in November, and the next one arrives on Tuesday, December 1, according to the same calendar.
The Rest of the Year at a Glance
The calendar also shows a second early payment at the end of the year. January 1, 2027 is New Year’s Day, so the January SSI payment is scheduled for Thursday, December 31, 2026. That means December will also carry two SSI deposits, on December 1 and December 31, and January will carry none.
| Benefit month | SSI payment date | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| October 2026 | Thursday, Oct. 1 | Regular date |
| November 2026 | Friday, Oct. 30 | Nov. 1 is a Sunday |
| December 2026 | Tuesday, Dec. 1 | Regular date |
| January 2027 | Thursday, Dec. 31 | Jan. 1 is a federal holiday |
Social Security retirement, survivor and disability benefits follow a different rhythm. Most beneficiaries are paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday of the month depending on their birth date: the 1st to the 10th, the 11th to the 20th, or the 21st to the 31st. For November 2026, the SSA calendar puts those dates on November 10, 18 and 25. People who started receiving Social Security before May 1997, or who receive both Social Security and SSI, are paid Social Security on the 3rd of the month, which is Tuesday, November 3.
Why It Matters for a Tight Budget
The practical risk is simple. A household that spends the October 30 deposit as if it were extra October money will reach the end of November with nothing left, because there is no deposit on November 1. For people living on SSI alone, that gap can mean missed rent or utility payments. The safest approach is to treat the October 30 money as November’s budget and set it aside until the month begins.
The SSA also advises people who do not receive a payment on the expected date to allow three additional mailing days before contacting the agency. Recipients who still get paper checks should keep that in mind, especially with a weekend right after the October 30 date.
The 2027 Raise Starts With the December 31 Payment
The year-end deposit is also the first one to include next year’s cost-of-living adjustment. According to the SSA’s COLA page, Social Security and SSI benefits will increase 3.6% in 2027. The increase applies to about 7.3 million SSI recipients starting with the payment on December 31, 2026, and to nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries starting with benefits payable in January 2027.
The SSA’s Office of the Chief Actuary sets the new federal maximums at $1,029 a month for an eligible individual, $1,544 for an eligible couple and $516 for an essential person. Those figures come from raising the unrounded 2026 annual amounts of $11,929.46 for an individual and $17,892.21 for a couple by 3.6%, dividing by 12 and rounding down. On that basis, the 2026 maximums were $994 and $1,491, so the individual maximum rises by $35 a month and the couple maximum by $53. Actual payments are lower for anyone with countable income, and some states add a supplement on top of the federal amount.
| Recipient | 2026 monthly maximum | 2027 monthly maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible individual | $994 | $1,029 |
| Eligible couple | $1,491 | $1,544 |
| Essential person | $498 | $516 |
Other 2027 Numbers Worth Knowing
The same SSA announcement raises the maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security tax to $192,300 in 2027. For beneficiaries younger than full retirement age, the earnings limit rises to $25,560, with $1 withheld for every $2 earned above it. For people reaching full retirement age in 2027, the limit is $67,920, with $1 withheld for every $3 above it until the month before they reach that age. There is no earnings limit once someone is at full retirement age for the entire year.
Individual notices with each person’s new benefit amount will start appearing in late November in the Message Center of my Social Security online accounts, for most beneficiaries who created an account by November 18, 2026, according to the SSA. Paper notices go out by mail. The agency also repeats a warning worth taking seriously at this time of year: it does not charge for its services and will not ask for wire transfers, gift cards or personal information by phone or email, so any message promising a “bonus” SSI payment in exchange for details is a scam.
